In 2012, Pan-kun snapped. The clever chimp was leaving the stage at the Aso Cuddly Dominion Zoo and he attacked a student trainee. After that, he officially retired from performing. However, he still lives at the Zoo and visitors can visit him there (albeit while he’s in captivity).

In 2012 when Pankun was performing for the Aso Cuddly Dominion Zoo, he attacked a student trainee staff and severely injured her. The attack was sudden and it left “cuts on her forehead, ears, ankles, and back.” The woman was flown by a helicopter to a hospital where she was hospitalized for weeks.
What happened to Pankun and James?
The pair’s owners, the Cuddly Dominion Zoo, announced that James passed away on March 8th, at the age of 12. Representatives say James enjoyed his last few years in comfortable retirement at the zoo in Kumamoto Prefecture, where Pankun continues to perform in daily shows.
