Why did Marriott sell Great America?
That little stand started it all. We didn’t stay in the amusement park business for long. We sold the parks in 1984 in order to focus on our hotel business. You can still visit Great America, though.

Today, California’s Great America announced that it would remain closed for the rest of 2020 due to the ongoing challenges related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Season Passes for 2021 will be available for purchase beginning September 8, 2020.

Cedar Fair Entertainment Company completes the purchase of land upon which California’s Great America is located for approximately $150 million. Cedar Fair purchased the land, totaling 112 acres, from the City of Santa Clara, which has leased the land since the founding of the park in 1976.
What happened to Great America?
California’s Great America has announced plans to remove the third coaster in less than a decade – a period in which no new coasters were added to the amusement park in Santa Clara, Calif. The Stealth flying coaster was removed the next year and relocated to Carowinds in North Carolina.
