What is an aperiodic vent?
Aperiodic vents lower the Q of your driver in a sealed box. They essentially makes your sealed box woofer act as if its in a box that is roughly 20% larger. If your box is really undersized or if you are using a large woofer in a small box, you could use two or more, to help reduce pressure in the box.
What are speaker ports for?
The ports relieve the pressure in the box and make it easier for the woofers to move. The ports push air out when the woofers move back and suck air in when the woofers move forwards. The ports ‘fire’ sound out in whichever direction they face – so rear ports need a wall behind them to bounce the sound back to you.
What is the port on a subwoofer?
The port redirects sound from the rear of the cone and adds it to the sound coming from the front, making the bass louder. This increase in efficiency lets you use a smaller amp than you would need with a comparable sealed box to play at the same volume.
Are two ports better than one?
yes, you have 1/2 port area, it will be half as long. BUT you will have higher port velocity. you have to look at the whole picture. If the 2 smaller ports keep port velocity low enough, then there is not much gain to a larger port.
How does port area affect tuning?
The lower the port is tuned, the longer it needs to be, and as we discussed, longer ports are harder for woofers to move. So, often times a compromise must be made to achieve a lower tune. For this reason, it would be discouraged to create a smaller frequency gap than half an octave.
Where do you put the speaker port?
Best acoustic coupling is accomplished when the port(s) are installed on the same side as the woofer(s). If this is not possible, installing ports on the side or back of the enclosure are good alternatives. Do not block the opening of any port(s) and always position multiple ports on the same side of the enclosure.
Are longer Ports better?
The lower the port is tuned, the longer it needs to be, and as we discussed, longer ports are harder for woofers to move. So, often times a compromise must be made to achieve a lower tune. If Lewis wants to make his build more brutal by making it windier we’re going to be primarily focused on smaller, shorter ports.
What size port do I need for 15 subs?
Subwoofer Box 15″
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Tuning Frequency | 34 Hz |
| Port Area | 31.00 inch2 |
| Port Inlet Width × Height | 1.95″ × 15.91″ |
| Port Length | 18.77″ |
Should you toe-in speakers?
Speaker toe-in has a significant effect on the sound – in terms of soundstaging, imaging and tonal balance – and we think it is important to understand some of the facts and data behind why the sound changes when you alter speaker toe. More toe-in reduces the level of early reflected sounds from the lateral side walls.
